Drinking in the Dolomites: Welcoming 2025 with Winter Wines in Northeast Italy

As we toast to the new year amidst the stunning snow-clad peaks of the Dolomites, my favourite winter activity is savouring the local wines that this unique region of Northeast Italy offers. Trentino, our chilly retreat, may be renowned for more than its scenic beauty—it’s also an important wine-growing region.

Alpine Beverages: While Trentino predominantly yields robust red wines, the neighbouring Alto-Adige is famed for its crisp whites. Here’s a taste of what warms us after a day on the slopes:

Vin Chaud: Nothing quite beats the comforting embrace of hot wine. Infused with orange, spices, and a splash of whisky.

Bombardino: Imagine a rich, warm egg-based custard laced with whisky, served in quaint coffee cups—a potent morning treat that’s a favourite among the locals.

Local Liquor: Grappa, the spirit of the region, offers excellent value. Costing half as much as gin, it’s a perfect digestive to conclude your mountain meals and cheese fondue.

Wines of the Region: Few of Trentino’s wines make their way to the UK, but those that do are truly memorable. Here are a few must-tries:

Pinot Grigio: The likes of Rivoli, and Roeno craft some of the finest Pinot Grigio available. The Wine Society offers a Pinot Grigio Vigneti delle Dolomiti for just £7.50 a bottle.

Kerner: This elegant white wine, both floral and fruity, captures the essence of the Alpine terroir.

Lagrein: My go-to red, reminiscent of Syrah, features a dry, slightly peppery profile with red fruits.

Pinot Noir: A go-to sip alongside a plate of the region’s finest ham, Speck.

Trento DOC sparkling wines, are the cooler cousin to champagne! Half the price, brilliant quality. Using Metodo Classico, crisp acidity, fine mousse, and vibrant flavours.
